Mongol Derby 2015 Medics Blog 06/08/2015

(Medic Mike)

After spending the night at horse station 2 watching the sun set over the distant hills set against a blood-red sky, with a white Margareta in hand skillfully crafted by Erik, our blood-wagon Captain, Medic 2 are well rested.

We met up with Medic 1 at horse station 3 and heard about Dr Carl's valiant efforts at lancing a herder's boil. We all gave him a round of applause.

We have moved onto horse station 5 and seen in the leading riders who have ridden in searing heat, pass through the station with no problems. Some are dehydrated and we have encouraged them to drink their water.

Deb has checked over the host family matriarch, who has felt unwell for some time. She had thyroid cancer and had 90% of her thyroid removed. She has had symptoms of palpitations and shortness of breath since her surgery six months ago. She sees her doctor every three months and takes medications, but it has been difficult to work out what her medications are as they are all written in Mongolian with no discernible clues as to what they are for. Our translator helped with the medical notes from her doctor. Her examination was normal and Deb advised her to see her doctor again.

We will move on to horse station 7 and camp there, with Medic 1 two stations behind us. This way we have the front and back runners covered if they need our assistance.
